Afzal Guru case to be President Pranab Mukherjee’s first challenge?

Arundhati Konar, YourMoneySite.com

Number thirteen might be considered unlucky, but it definitely is not for India’s new President Pranab Mukherjee. After a lot of clashes, the former finance minister, was declared the country’s 13th President on Sunday. However, his new role may not be as easy as winning the Presidential elections.

Even before Pranab Mukherjee can go through the swearing ceremony for the post of President of India, political parties which came in for his support are hinting that it will not be a cakewalk for him. Mukherjee is yet to complete his 24-hours as the newly elected President, but he already has a challenge waiting for him - the unsettled case of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru.

Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray wants Pranab Mukherjee to start his Presidency by taking a call on the Afzal Guru case. Thackeray wants Mukherjee to declare capital punishment to the Parliament attack convict.

Shiv Sena’s party’s mouth piece 'Saamna' says that the new President should immediately reject Afzal Guru's mercy plea. Thackeray wrote, "we have many expectations from you. We urge you to reject Afzal Guru's mercy plea and hang him. Pranabda you should do this on priority basis and should kick-start your career as President of India. It is an August conduct that we expect from you."

In order to support Pranab Mukherjee’s candidature; Shiv Sena broke ranks with the NDA.

Mercy pleas awaiting President’s decision:
In total, the President’s office has received 27 mercy pleas that consist of one of the three convicts named in Rajiv Gandhi assassination case. Reports suggest that so far, three of the pleas have been rejected, while 10 cases of death penalty have been reconsidered and given lifetime imprisonment. Currently 14 other pleas are still awaiting the President’s decision.
